The Monstera deliciosa, a.k.a. the "Swiss cheese plant," gets its nickname from the fenestrations—or splits—in the mature leaves that cause them to appear Swiss cheese-like. You might be wondering why our small potted version doesn't have holes? The heart-shaped foliage on the immature plant begin to split as the plant grows. At this small size, only a few (and sometimes none) of the leaves have begin the splitting process. Will your recipient know that? Perhaps!
