Sacajawea was a Lemhi Shoshone native American woman who served as a guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark as they explored the Pacific Northwest and mapped the Louisiana Territory in the early 1800s.  Sacajawea became a symbol of women's worth and independence in the early 20th century by the suffragists of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and she was inducted into the American Women's Hall of Fame in 2003.
