This is an engraved portrait of General George Washington from the 19th century. The print was produced by William E. Marshall and was based off of Gilbert Stuart's original oil-on-canvas painting. The piece shows George Washington, seated, in a three-quarter pose. Washington holds a sword in one hand, with the hilt resting in the crook of his elbow. In his other hand, Washington holds a folded piece of paper. The bottom margins of the engraving detail Washinton’s service as a general. The father of our country, George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) and served two terms as the first United States president, from 1789 to 1797.
