Berberis vulgaris  This bitter tonic contains berberine, a powder antibacterial compound that can also stimulate the secretion of bile. Used as a digestive aid, it is particularly useful in cases of poor fat digestion and assimilation, biliousness, acid indigestion, and constipation. Barberry bark is also often used against gallstones. Its anti-microbial activity can make it effective against infections of the gastrointestinal or urinary tract due. Barberry bark can also make an effective liver tonic and alterative, helping to purify the blood by promoting proper elimination of metabolic wastes.
