Morny was the illegitimate son of Hortense de Beauharnais, the estranged wife of Louis Bonaparte, and Charles-Joseph, comte de Flahaut. He was born in Switzerland, but his birth certificate falsely claimed he was born in Paris and was the son of Auguste Jean Hyacinthe Demorny, a Prussian army officer.
