Naturally worn due to age. Wooden handle is bound with leather. In the precolonial days swords of these types were used to execute slaves and prisoners of war during ceremonies held at the funeral of prominent people, such as chiefs, war leaders and blacksmiths. Later goats and dogs served as substitutes for human victims. According to the person I purchased this from, this is the same sword featured on the Antiques Roadshow
