Type used both by infantry and as boarding pikes. See Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann, 107.PA. 13 ¾” length with elongated diamond section point on integral open seam conical socket. The edge pierced for a securing spike. That construction resulted in a secure wood-to-metal fit and required less time to join than fitting wood to an enclosed conical socket. The surface with original forged scale, hammer finish, tool finish and dark oxidation. A shortage of firearms at the outbreak of the War resulted in many troops being armed with pikes of a variety of forms, such as this for the first two years.
