With this in mind, these artisanal urushi chopsticks were designed with the hope that they would be used and cherished for a long time. They feature the smooth, comfortable feel and durability unique to traditional lacquerware, along with a glossy yet translucent finish. The handle is decorated with a unique tortoiseshell pattern, making them especially meaningful as a gift. The lacquer coating also resists water, oil, stains, and odors for long-lasting everyday use. Yamachiku use only locally-grown and sustainably-harvested Moso bamboo from Kumamoto and Fukuoka—a thick, fast-growing variety that can reach 20 meters (65 ft) in just six months but must mature for 3–5 years to be strong enough for their chopsticks.
