Its small green tufts of needles arise from knobs on the branches. The soft needles turn yellow in the fall and will fall off in winter, which makes this a deciduous conifer tree! The name “hackmatack” is derived from an Algonquian word meaning “wood used for snowshoes”. It was utilized by indigenous makers for toboggans and canoe parts. Can live up to 200 years! This is a state threatened species only found in the northeastern corner of Illinois. Due to its thin bark and shallow roots, it cannot tolerate prescribed burns.
