Ucayali River Cacao is a central fermentary that works with cocoa farmers along the Ucayali River outside of the Peruvian city of Pucallpa. Ucayali River Cacao has partnered with USAID and Alianza Peru to give local farmers access to an alternate market to cocaine. Working with around 400 smallholder farmers with one to three hectares of land each, Ucayali River Cacao purchases raw material from these farmers at a price that is above market. The goal is to produce high quality fine cacao while helping these farmers earn a legitimate income rather than returning to coca production. Started in 2020, Moku is dedicated to spotlighting cacao farmers around the world, and handcrafts high-quality, bean-to-bar, single-origin chocolate from raw, direct trade cacao beans. Moku's direct trade beans are sourced from farmers in Nicaragua, Peru, Dominican Republic, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and Colombia.
