This book contains an explanation of our origins, the central organizing idea of biology, and “the best idea that anyone ever had.” It is an excellent introductory overview of the history, principles, and manifestations of the theory of evolution. Although the reading level is probably best suited to 8 - 13 year olds, we hesitate to designate an age because it can be a read-aloud book for younger kids, and older kids (and grownups like us!) will find this thorough and accurate account fascinating as well. There are abundant photographs, and one of our favorite illustrators, Steve Jenkins, lent his talents to this title too. Topics covered include: evidence for the theory of evolution, fossil formation, Charles Darwin, variation, competition, natural selection, genetics, missing links, continental shift, island biogeography, coevolution, and present day examples of evolution in-progress. 102 pages
