A resident of the Long Island City / Astoria neighborhoods in Queens since 1960, Isamu Noguchi was joined in the area by fellow artist and sculptor Mark di Suvero (eventual founder of Socrates Sculpture Park) ten years later. From 2011 to 2012, in response to the enormous changes in the borough since that time, The Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park asked four artists (Natalie Jeremijenko, Mary Miss, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and George Trakas) known for their work in the public sphere to conceive of new approaches to development in this area of Long Island City that Noguchi and di Suvero helped to shape. This book was published as a compendium to that exhibition, entitled Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City.
