We found ourselves at Soda Lake in Wyoming, hoping to photograph some Barrow’s Goldeneyes. When we first arrived, the lake seemed more frozen than anything else. We drove around, searching for open water, and finally parked when we saw a patch where the ice had broken. The lake was surreal—huge chunks of ice floated all over, shifting the landscape before our eyes. The goldeneyes were close to the shore, but by the time I was ready to shoot, they had already made their way farther out on the lake. It was early May, and though we were desperate for warmer weather, Wyoming wasn’t ready to let go of the cold just yet. The
