William of Newburgh: Historia rerum anglicarum (Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading)

Fri., 6pm (U.S. Eastern Time) Course Description: William of Newburgh’s Historia rerum anglicarum is his narrative of events between the Norman Conquest into the reign of Richard II. Once acclaimed as ‘the father of historical criticism’, William is both a superb stylist in Latin and a penetrating critic of the role of the historian. His Historia details events including the Conquest and its aftermath, the Anarchy, the assassination of Thomas Becket, and fabulous stories such as the Green Children of Woolpit. This course will read excerpts from the first two books. DETAILS Level: Intermediate to Advanced Latin reading. No prior knowledge of Medieval Latin is assumed.
