Despite its dramatic appearance, this Calathea is surprisingly easy to care for—especially in coastal climates—and adds moody elegance to any indoor space. Light: Bright gentle light is ideal. Tolerates lower light but colors may fade. Keep out of direct sun.Temperature: Prefers indoor temperatures between 65–80°F. Avoid cold drafts.Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. In San Francisco, Daly City, Half Moon Bay, and other coastal areas, ambient humidity is typically perfect—these plants grow indoors like weeds. In warmer inland areas like Oakland or San Jose, a humidifier may help during dry months, and occasional monitoring for spider mites is a good idea.Water: Keep soil consistently moistened but not overly soggy. Water when the top inch feels dry. It is often recommended to use distilled or filtered water when possible; however San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy tap water is usually fine.Potting mix: Use a rich, well-draining potting mix with some perlite or bark for aeration.
