Montegrappa Limited Edition Frankenstein Fountain Pen
A legendary horror classic is re-imagined for writers with Frankenstein L.E.: a menacing new mechanical pen design from Montegrappa. Created entirely in Italy, period materials, inventive engineering and theatrical staging combine on an XXL edition inspired by the iconic, mad-scientist aesthetic of Universal Pictures’ Frankenstein. Limited-edition fountain pens and rollerballs celebrate a film and character that have shaped popular imaginations since their debut in 1931. Frankenstein L.E. is handcrafted from antiqued brass, and emulates Victorian laboratory equipment with dark ruthenium electroplating. Traces of the mad scientist’s makeshift workmanship inspired the design, with tiny rivets and sutures realised in the mould along with miniature science props. The grip section is the most tactile component of any writing instrument, and is realised in brass and resin, and detailed with laser-engraved lightning charges. Mechanical complications on Frankenstein L.E. showcase the inventive engineering that has typified many of Montegrappa’s most extravagant designs over the last decade. For this edition, special effects include a spring-loaded capacitor clip, cap release lock, gyro fidget mechanism and a handwheel-operated curio chamber that reveals Frankenstein’s Monster – embedded within the cap. Fountain pens from the edition are equipped with Montegrappa’s supercharged Power-Push filling mechanism feeding a custom, 18K yellow-gold Frankenstein nib. A bottle of green ink is also included. A prototype of the mad scientist’s lab provides a fitting home for the first edition from Montegrappa’s new Universal Monsters collector imprint. Each is equipped with an operating table with pen restraints and includes a power supply that activates a working plasma ball. Editions of 230 fountain pens and rollerballs reference European standard voltage, and the film’s iconic use of electrification to update the Frankenstein mythos in a time of technological angst. Developed in close collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences, Frankenstein L.E. is the first luxury writing instrument to be inspired by Universal Pictures’ legendary Universal Monsters archive. Adapting the iconic character’s features to a pen’s shape and ergonomic performance required special expertise and extensive prototyping. The process of design and development for Frankenstein L.E. spanned more than three years. All Montegrappa writing instruments are manufactured by hand at the company’s headquarters, beneath the Monte Grappa massif in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Artisan-operated since 1912, Montegrappa’s historic factory boasts state-of-the-art machinery and tooling which enable it to continually challenge the accepted conventions of writing instrument design;
