The Soft Machine, William S. Burroughs First U.K. edition, first printing of Burroughs' fourth book and the first entry in his Nova Trilogy, originally composed using the cut-up technique partly from manuscripts belonging to The Word Hoard. While technically the third edition (following the Olympia Press and Grove Press editions), this edition features twenty pages of new material, plus about eight pages from the first edition which had been removed in the second edition. About five pages of material which was present in both the first and second edition has been removed and this edition also includes an "Appendix" and "Afterword". London: Calder and Boyars, 1968. Publisher's original brown boards, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 188. A near fine or better copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket. Binding remains tight, sturdy and square. Minimal wear to boards, internally clean. Jacket shows light general shelfwear and rubbing, protected in archival mylar.
