This famous image is by celebrated poster artist, Leonetto Cappiello. A redhead in a flapper dress toasts us with her glass of Contratto Vermouth, as she falls backwards in glee onto a leaf of the Muscat grape. We are offered both sweet and dry vermouth in this poster from the Contratto company, which is based in Canelli, Italy. This image is exceptionally rare in this size, it is sometimes seen in the 55" x 78" size. Giuseppe Contratto founded his winery in the Piedmont region of Italy in 1867. Using the Muscat grapes that grow in the area, Contratto became known as one of the first creators of sparkling wine. They supplied the Vatican, and began to diversify into the international liqueur market in the 1920s. The hand-dug caves under the winery in the town of Canelli have been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and the brand is still in production today.
