I Want You Uncle Sam - Reprint 1975
One of the best known of all posters ever created is this imagery of Uncle Sam that was originally created by James Montgomery Flagg to stimulate recruiting efforts for the United States Army during World War I. Flagg modeled the portrait of Uncle Sam on himself, only adding a goatee and white hair. The poster was wildly successful reaching over four million copies produced during World War I alone. It was reprinted here by the US Government in 1975 for use in recruiting for the Vietnam War. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) began his illustration career at the age of 12, with contributions to Life magazine by age 14. He studied in New York at the Art Students League as well as in London and Paris. He worked in a variety of illustration styles in publishing, and rose to become the top paid illustrator at the height of his career.
