The Red Cross was a critical part of each of America's World Wars. During the war years, female Red Cross volunteers provided critical services in field hospitals and evacuation hospitals, on hospital trains and ships, and as flight nurses on medical transport planes. Red Cross nurses saw equal amounts (if not more) war atrocities than some of the men fighting did. The Red Cross needed all the financial help it could get from stateside civilians to help mend injured soldiers on the bloody battlefields. President Roosevelt called The Red Cross' work at this time the "greatest single crusade of mercy in all of history." Toni Frissell (1907-1988) was an incredibly important American photographer. She began her career at Vogue Magazine, and during the War years was the head photographer for the Red Cross.
