A source of butyric acid from the salts of calcium and magnesium, in an enterically-coated tablet designed to release in the small intestine. This short chain fatty acid is produced in the body by certain probiotic bacteria.* Butyric acid is the main food source of the colonocytes, which are cells in the lining of the colon. Butyric acid supports the colonocytes, helping them to function properly and maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining. Butyric acid may also prevent and reverse the colon inflammation experienced by people suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These disorders are classified as inflammatory bowel diseases, or IBD.
