The Kennedy Withdrawal

Drawing on classified documents, oral histories, memoirs and presidential audio tapes, historian Marc J. Selverstone examines the U.S. commitment to Vietnam during the Kennedy years. His work presents a major revision to popular understanding about Kennedy’s intentions, revealing that the plan to withdraw from Vietnam was a political device, enabling the administration to continue military assistance while managing public opinion.
