Is an orca (killer whale) a whale or a dolphin? Contrary to popular belief, killer whales are not actually whales; they are oceanic dolphins.  Orcas are the largest species in the dolphin family. Due to their size and the fact that they are commonly referred to as "killer whales," many people mistakenly classify them as whales.
