Monarch and her Mexican Sunflower Necklace
One last drink until she gets to her overwintering home high in the mountains of Mexico. It has been a journey longer than she ever anticipated. About 8 months to get here. How could she have guessed? She had never done it before, yet everything in her body was urging her to make that journey to rest. Only the air currents and her beautiful wings are what got her here through so, so many obstacles. Nobody really knows how she does this. Could it be her antennae? Is there something within them that helps guide her generation here? Magnetic poles, air currents, the weather patterns? She doesn't know why and neither do humans. There is only one generation of butterflies, hers, that make that sometimes 3,000 mile trek from their summer home to only a few mountain sides in Mexico. After she has rested for the winter, she will fly a bit north to maybe Texas. There she will drink nectar, mate, lay eggs, and then complete her hard life.
