Large Victorian Agate Anchor Brooch

Popular in the latter half of the Victorian era, anchor jewelry had ties to both the nautical world as well as the spiritual world.  A symbol of hope, steadfastness and safety to sailors navigating the seas to protect their country or to discover new and wonderful places, the image of the anchor also brought solace to everyday Victorians dealing with challenging circumstances.  When paired with a heart and a cross, the 19th century symbolism of the anchor took on a deeper religious meaning symbolizing faith, hope and charity.  This exquisite brooch is made of beautiful banded agate capped and wrapped in etched sterling silver.
