Bethlehem Steel Founded in 1857 and dissolved in 2003, Bethlehem Steel was one of the most successful and significant figures of 20th century industries. A pioneer in the steel industry, it built the first heavy forging plant in the U.S. in the 1890s, forged the tower of the world’s first ferris wheel for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 - the world’s largest single piece of cast iron to date-and produced the first wide-flange structural shapes made in America in the early 20th century, launching the era of the skyscraper.
