20s Flapper Era Handmade Woven Bead Long Necklace
Add some flapper style to your look with this classic Sautoir style beaded necklace...The French have a term for any long necklace that suspends a tassel or other ornament: a sautoir necklace. These were extremely popular during the 1920's (you may be more familiar with the long strand of pearls sometimes knotted at one point), enough that it became a popular handicraft to make them at home. This is an intensive process, wherein one weave or knots small seed beads on silk cord thread, and this weave takes a circular or tubular form. In this example, we have clear glass seed beads -which catch the light nicely- on ivory color thread cord. The ends have been finished in knots, with loop style tassels. Sorry, no labels or maker's marks present. Overall condition is excellent, with some light discoloration throughout, as well as one tassel loop having to be repaired -leaving that loop slightly longer than the rest.
