The 2008 World Series was a best-of-seven playoff between the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies and the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays. This was the Phillies' first World Series appearance in fifteen years. The Series began on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 in Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay and concluded the following Wednesday, October 29 at CitiBank Park in Philadelphia. Game 5 determined the series, and Philadelphia jumped ahead 2-0 early in the first inning. The Rays were able to tie before rain caused the game to be postponed in the sixth inning. The last innings were not played until 2 days later, and after a hard fought battle Philadelphia outscored Tampa Bay 4 runs to 3.
