Oconee Pecan (Type I)
Carya illinoinensis 'Oconee' Type I Bears at an early age. Large nut easy crack shell. Unprotected young trees may be susceptible to sun scald. Hardy to 0-10 degrees F(zones 6-10). Pecans prefer slightly acid soil (pH 5.5-6.5).Pollinators Avalon, Caddo, Cherryle, Elliott, Gafford, Kanza, Kiowa and McMillan Pecan fertilizer has extra zinc, which is required for good nut production (12-4-8 with a unit of zinc). Fertilize 2 times each year in February and May. Note: Pecans are not self pollinating. Plant at least two within a quarter mile of each other. It takes a Type I and Type II to cross pollinate (Stuart & Elliott are good pollinators).
