1970's Portsmouth NH Token - Park Free - Shop In Portsmouth NH - Vintage Token

This listing is for one Portsmouth NH "Free Parking" Token issued by the city to encourage shopping downtown. The exact date of issue for these tokens is unknown, but this version of the token was issued in the early 70's. These tokens were produced by the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the City. Local merchants could purchase the tokens and give them to customers upon a sale or otherwise to encourage them to return with an incentive. The tokens could then be used in the local parking meters. The tokens would later be redeemed by the City with the Chamber of Commerce. There were at least two different types of these tokens used. The first in aluminum (issued in the 1960s) and the second in brass or bronze and issued in the early 1970s. The City of Portsmouth celebrates its 400th anniversary in 2023!
