Starfish - Sugar, Multi-legged, Finger, and Bat The common starfish, common sea star or sugar starfish is the most common and familiar starfish in the north-east Atlantic. Belonging to the family Asteriidae, it has five arms and usually grows to between 4–12 inches across, although larger specimens are known. The only species of its genus, it is among the largest sea stars in the world, with a maximum arm span of 3.3 ft. Sunflower sea stars usually have 16 to 24 limbs; their color can vary widely. They are predatory, feeding mostly on sea urchins, clams, snails, and other small invertebrates.
