The hybrids contain Japanese walnut (J. ailantifolia) which add and enhance the limited resistance of pure butternut.  Our hybrid selections are largely ¾ J. cinerea and ¼ J. ailantifolia determined through DNA and morphological analyses.  Our selection goals are butternut canker resistance, high resemblance to butternut timber type, and those that produce nuts similar to pure butternut. From a variety of studies, we have found these complex hybrids fulfill the same ecological benefits as pure butternut.
