New leaves emerge maroon and when fully open develop dark veins on a light yellow-green background. However, the leaf retains a strong pink/red overtone. Towards late season, the leaf tends to darken somewhat, developing greener tones. A hardy tree, but somewhat difficult to propagate. The name means 'red snipes over a winter marsh' in ancient Japanese. Also known as 'Beni shigitatsu', 'Samari', or 'Samurai'.
