Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Catholic parents of Italian heritage. After surviving a life threatening illness, Jorge felt called to the religious life and entered the Jesuit novitiate. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and became superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina. He was created archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and Cardinal in 2001.
