Pope Francis (1936 - 2025) While most pontificates are memorable for decrees, dogmas, meetings with heads of state and pastoral visits around the world, the pontificate of Pope Francis was seemingly one of moments. Washing and kissing the feet of women prisoners, embracing the man with the disfiguring disease, sitting the little girl with Down Syndrome next to him on stage, Pope Francis showed us in moments a different way to live and a different way to love. Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Catholic parents of Italian heritage. After surviving a life threatening illness, Jorge felt called to the religious life and entered the Jesuit novitiate. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and became superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina. He was created archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and Cardinal in 2001.
