Aechmea mertensii, large form. From Brazil, this clone grows considerably larger and more robust than the typical; 24 to 30 inches is average. The inflorescence is a cylindrical head of loosely spaced, short branches on an erect spike. The scape bracts are bright red. Not common in cultivation.
