A large growing species that has had something of an identity crisis over the years. A similar species, Ae. rubens, was long confused with this species. It turns out that mulfordii is, or at least was, rare in cultivation. Now being more widely grown, it is a colorful plant with leaves ranging from green to bronze and a branched inflorescence of deep orange with red bracts. The inflorescence appears in spring and has color that lasts 6 to 9 months. Suitable for sunny locations or shade. At Tropiflora, this species attracts humming birds.
