Mined in the state of Kansas, they started out as fossils from the Cretaceous period, around 80 million years ago. They are sourced from the Niobrara Formation also called the Niobrara Chalk that is a geologic formation that was laid down approximately 84 million years ago. Over time bony material was replaced by pyrite. Sometimes you can see the original fossil imbedded in the rock.Kansas Pop Rocks is a name given to concretion stones which are found in SW Kansas.
