Zuni Fetish Carving Set of Turquoise Grizzly Bears Mama and Cub
Here's are two sweet Zuni fetish bears hand-carved of turquoise, the most important stone to Southwestern Native American people. The two turquoise bears are being sold as a set because they look like mama and baby and they've lived together for many years. Mama bear is clearly a grizzly with her characteristic well-formed hump. She's been carved with movement and appears to be walking or perhaps fishing, teaching her little one how to get by in the world. Baby bear is fatter and more playful. He's happy and has the tiniest bit of sparkle on his haunch that comes from a little vein of copper embedded within his turquoise body. They're carved by different Zuni artists, but they come from the same collection and they both capture the spirit of bears for the Zuni people which, in traditional fetishes, would be used in ceremonies. This turquoise mama grizzly and cub set is not ceremonial, though. It's made as artwork to be enjoyed. Wouldn't they be a fantastic gift for a fiercely loving mama that you know! Bear fetishes like these are powerful. They're guardians of the West and they're associated with strength, courage and healing. Wild grizzly bears like mama here once roamed New Mexico, but the last known grizzly bear in NM was killed in the early 1930's near Silver City. These two precious animal fetishes come from the collection of a beautiful woman who grew up in Germany during World War II. Post war, she moved to the United States and became a model in New York City. She eventually married, left her modeling career, and moved to El Paso with her husband. In El Paso, she first experienced the charm of Native American art and jewelry. Many years later, she attended her first of several celebrated Native American art field trips hosted by Martha Struever. During this time, she expanded her collection of Native American art and jewelry. Her collection wasn't vast, but it was extremely meaningful to her. After a long and full life, this dear woman recently passed away. She knew that her collection which she lovingly called her "treasures" was to be handled by Turquoise & Tufa, and she expressed her wishes that these dear fetishes would bring as much joy to us as they did to her. Measurements: Mama bear measures 1 1/2" long x 3/4" wide x 1 1/8" high. She's unsigned. Cub measures 1 1/4" long x 5/8" wide 1/2" high.
