Gaye was a star on his way to superstardom when he first teamed with Terrell. She had toured with James Brown but was still a teenager when she signed to Motown in 1965. Though her solo career never took off, she would create magic with Gaye, who earlier had found success with other partners, Mary Wells and Kim Weston. Tammi’s sexy voice and undeniable charisma was a perfect match for Gaye’s own romantic appeal.
