As a schoolgirl, I loved going to the local bazaar and staring at the bricks of halva – the sweetened sesame confection popular through the Middle East, Caucasus, and Eastern Europe. My mom and I used to spend evenings with a cup of black tea, chunks of halva and endless conversation. The Eastern European Jewish immigrants were among the first to introduce this millennia-old treat to the American consumer.
