Algae Details UTEX Number: 2229 Class: Chlorophyceae Strain: Chlorella kessleri Medium: Modified Bold 3N Medium (MB3N) Origin: Description of Location: GPS: Type Culture: No Collection: Isolation: S. Trelease Isolator Number: X-ray induced chlorophyll mutant from UTEX 2228 Deposition: S. Beale (2/5/80) Relatives: Also Known As: Chlorella vulgaris (Starr & Zeikus 1987) Notes: deposited as 610; to Beale from S. Granick; grows vigorously on D-glucose in the dark and minerals only in the light; requires light for chlorophyll formation; in the dark, only tiny amounts of chlorophyll and protochlorophyll(ide) are formed; in the light, it is phenotypically identical to the wild type (Herron & Mauzerall 1972); physiology/biochemistry/taxonomy (Kessler & Huss 1992); The names of the Chlorella strains given in the last list of cultures (Starr & Zeikus 1987) were based primarily upon the taxonomic treatments of Kessler & Maifarth (1960), Kessler & Soeder (1962), Fott & Novakova (1969) and Kessler (1976). In 1992, Kessler & Huss revised the names of axenic UTEX cultures. Subsequently, most of the changes, but not all, were accepted and incorporated in the UTEX list. "[K&H]" tags the 1992 identifications of Kessler & Huss.
