ESSAY One Saturday in 1966, six people gathered in a small restaurant in Newburgh on the banks of the Hudson River in New York City. Among them were American composer John Cage, poet and essayist Octavio Paz, the great architect Buckminster Fuller, and other prominent figures of the era. While eating, the conversation led them to promise to meet again in Mexico. Paz insightfully proposed a plan: "from this Monday that follows, in a year." Originally published by Wesleyan University Press in 1969, From Monday in a Year quickly became a key piece in the composer's long list of works. Its contents consist of twenty-one texts, including notes, essays, lectures, and diary entries that the artist, musician, and composer wrote between 1961 and 1967.
