Abelmoschus esculentus Days to Maturity: 60 The most popular heirloom okra, this variety was developed by Clemson University in South Carolina and won the 1939 All-America Selections. Okra is native to northern & western Africa and was brought to the American South by enslaved African people as early as the 16th century, becoming a Southern dietary staple. Pods are smooth, tender, and easy to cook with in a wide variety of dishes including soups, stews, pickled okra and fried okra. The flowers are also edible! Grows to about 5 feet tall with abundant fruit production.
