Sorry Bamba, a key figure in Malian music, bridged the gap between traditional Mali music and post-colonial musical crossovers. Born in 1938 in Mopti, his father’s noble status forbade him from playing music, as it was reserved for Griots. After losing his parents at 10, Bamba found solace in music, teaching himself to play an African flute. Influenced by local, highlife, and European music, he formed his first band, Group Goumbe, in 1957. With Mali's independence in 1960, Bamba gained exposure through state radio and later founded two successful bands, Bani Jazz and Kanaga Orchestra, blending Latin jazz, R&B, funk, and traditional styles. In 1977, Bamba produced a second LP for Sonafric, now being reissued by Africa Seven after extensive restoration.LISTEN
