A mighty hot record from trumpeter John Lamkin — an obscure Maryland-based musician who recorded this fantastic album of jazzy grooves in the mid-'80s! John's trumpet has a crisp, clear bite reminiscent of Tom Browne’s funky style, yet his tone adapts beautifully to mellower tracks as well. The album features mostly original material, enriched with vibrant percussion and keyboards. Despite its mid-'80s release, the sound leans heavily toward the late-'70s jazz-funk vibe. Highlights include the expansive "Hot" suite, along with "Flower Power," "722," "Ticket,""Maliala," and "Aiya," which features lovely vocals from Eartha Lamkin. LISTEN
