Boro are a class of Japanese vintage textiles that have been mended or patched together. During the Edo period, Boro came to predominately signify clothing worn by the peasant farming classes, who mended their garments with spare fabric scraps out of economic necessity. In many cases, a boro garment would be handed down within the family over generations, eventually resembling a patchwork after decades of mending. We are using relatively best condition textiles often taken from a larger piece but some of these fabrics are over 100 years old. Many of them are Japanese indigo (aizome) or vegetable dyed. Boro masks have three patterns: Katazome print (stencil print), Kasuri (yukinko, ikat) and yarn dye patterns.
