The Desert

I have always been drawn to the ocean. It’s where I feel most connected to the world. Wether I’m cruising the south pacific or the inside passage of Alaska or scuba diving in the caribbean or photographing Humpback whales in Maui the ocean has always felt where I belong. But last year circumstances took me to the desert, a place I never had a longing to visit. Figured it was nothing but dirt and cactuses with no real life. Boy was I wrong. Over the last 2 years I have spent 10 weeks in the desert mostly walking with the wild mustangs but during that time I have discovered the great diversity of life it offers and a subtle beauty that I think you can only appreciate if you spend time there. I could go on and on about it but I think the band America said it best in their song “A Horse With No Name.”  “The ocean is a desert with its life underground And a perfect disguise above” So just as light needs dark, strong needs weak and high needs low so does the ocean need the desert.
