If you’ve ever had the good fortune to see (or, better yet, turn the pages of) such a manuscript, you’ll know exactly the kind of magic I’m talking about: the way light flashes and bursts from the pages thanks to the careful use of gold-foil, especially if it’s set starkly against the kind of vivid blue that only ultramarine pigment (more precious than gold, and extracted from crushed lapis lazuli) can provide.
