A type of fan palm, the saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) produces bluish-green palmate fronds in a bush-like habit. Individual fronds can reach a width of 2 to 3 feet. The saw palmetto grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10 where it requires full sunlight and fast-draining, fertile soils. Planting this palm specimen proves most successful in the spring or early summer, once soil temperatures reach at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The high salt tolerance of the palmetto makes it an ideal planting for a home on the water. Palmettos can handle full sun to complete shade, growing slowly to a typical height of 3 to 6 feet. This plant will spread out, though it takes many years for one to cover a large area. It grows thick and dense, with no visible trunk since the base of the plant remains close to the ground.
