Hardy Pecan - CARYA illinoinensis Native. Zone 5-9. Full Sun-Sun. Perennial. Self-Fertile. The largest member of the hickory family forms a tall straight trunk with symmetrical, broadly oval crown. The sweet edible nuts of pecan are favored by wildlife and people. Pecan is native to the rich, moist soils of bottomlands of the Mississippi Valley to southern Indiana with limited distribution in Ohio. Nut production can be sparse in the northern part of its growing range, particularly when spring is late and summer is cool.
